What is FREED
FREED is First Episode Rapid Early Intervention for Eating Disorders. It is a service for 16 to 25-year-olds who have had an eating disorder for three years or less.
Freed is currently being rolled out across England and the Black Country is offering this service to ensure young people have access to specialised treatment which is evidenced based focusing on early intervention.
Early intervention in this age group is much more effective at reversing the changes to the brain, body and behaviour. It also appreciates that young people are often struggling with challenges such as transitions and external influences.
Eating disorders aren’t all about food. People with eating disorders often feel a lot of pain, sadness and worry. The eating disorder can be a way to cope.
What to Expect from FREED
As a FREED client you will receive an introduction call from the service within 48 hours of us receiving your referral. During this call a specialist clinician will discuss your referral and the difficulties you may be having with food. We know it can be really hard to reach out for help, however, the sooner you seek help, the sooner things can start to get better.
If we feel the service is right for you, a face to face appointment will be arranged for an assessment. We aim to offer this assessment within 2 weeks.
When you are offered an assessment appointment, this will usually be for one hour. During this time you have a chance to talk about what is bothering you and what you would like help with. Our staff understand you will be nervous, and you are welcome to bring someone with you for support. We will do our best to make you feel at ease and you will not be judged. The staff who will guide you through the assessment are specialists in eating disorders and understand the difficulties you may be facing.
Following the assessment a decision will be made on the best treatment option and this will be discussed with you. There is usually a waiting time between the assessment and treatment, this will be discussed with you.
